We give the iconic Italian summer sipper a twist with the addition of pilsner. Our quick and easy homemade, alcohol-free aperitif mix gives it a bittersweet edge, reminiscent of a quintessential Italian blend. It makes a refreshing accompaniment when sitting on the patio and is a perfect pre-dinner sip alongside some salty snacks.

Ingredients for the Alcohol-Free Aperitif Mix

  • Note: Makes enough for about five servings of Pilsner Spritz
  • 1 cup (250 mL) 100% pure ruby red grapefruit juice
  • ½ cup (125 mL) 100% pure orange juice
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) maraschino cherry juice (from a jar of maraschino cherries)

Ingredients for the Pilsner Spritz

  • ¼ cup + 1 tbsp (75 mL) Alcohol-Free Aperitif Mix
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) pilsner
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) grapefruit-flavoured sparkling water
  • 1-2 drops orange bitters
  • Orange slice, for serving

Directions for Alcohol-Free Aperitif Mix

  1. 1. Add grapefruit, orange and maraschino cherry juice to a jar with a lid. Stir to combine. Seal and refrigerate if not using right away. The mix will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Directions for Pilsner Spritz

  1. 1. Fill a tulip or wine glass halfway with ice.
  2. 2. Pour in alcohol-free aperitif mix, grapefruit-flavoured water, pilsner and bitters. Stir to combine. Garnish with orange slice and serve immediately.

Tips

  • For best results, choose 100% pure juice from the refrigerated section of your grocery store and a higher quality grapefruit-flavoured sparkling water.
  • Try it with alcohol-free beer (or omit beer completely) if looking for something without alcohol.
