Get into the holiday spirit with this Yuletide mule! Candy cane syrup and fresh mint add a festive twist to the traditionally ginger-forward Moscow Mule. Topping it with a lime-infused beer (or light lager) adds a delicate crispness and balances out the sweetness. Cheerful and peppy, it’s the perfect sip for the holiday season.

Ingredients for Candy Cane Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup water
  • 6 standard peppermint candy canes, unwrapped and crushed, about a scant ½ cup (125 mL)

Ingredients for Peppermint Mule

  • 12 mint leaves, plus a sprig of mint for garnish
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp (15 + 5 mL) fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) candy cane simple syrup
  • ½ cup (125 mL) good-quality ginger beer
  • ½ cup (125 mL) lime-flavoured beer (or light lager)
  • ⅓ cup (80 mL) lime-flavoured sparkling water
  • Candy cane, for garnish

Directions for Candy Cane Simple Syrup

  1. 1. In a small pot, bring water and crushed candy cane to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly until the candy cane has dissolved, approximately 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week. (Makes ½ cup, or 125 mL.)

Directions for Peppermint Mule

  1. 1. Add mint leaves and 1 tbsp lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Muddle for 15 seconds to release the oils and juices. Fill the shaker one-quarter full with ice and shake for 15 to 20 seconds to chill. For the most authentic experience, pour into a copper cup filled to one-third with crushed or pebbled ice. Add candy cane simple syrup, ginger beer, beer, lime-flavoured sparkling water, and remaining 1 tsp (5 mL) lime juice and stir gently to chill. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a candy cane, and serve immediately.

Tip

  • You can use a highball glass if you don’t have a copper cup.
