Yay! Beer can actually be good for you (in moderation, of course). But then, Trappist monks could have told us that a long time ago. After all, they drank beer to sustain themselves during their Lenten fasts, calling it their "liquid bread". Beer is rich in nutrients, including vitamins A, C and B6, folate, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, zinc, iron, calcium, protein and carbohydrates. It also contains antioxidants which may help protect us from diseases such as cancer.
A standard 341 ml beer contains about 140 calories, and can be enjoyed as part of a healthy lifestyle. What makes this even more impressive is if you compare this to a 213 ml drink of rye and cola, which has 171 calories. Or a glass of wine, which has 100 calories in just a 142 ml serving. The bottom line is that, as long as you maintain a balanced diet and a healthy, active lifestyle, drinking beer won't make you gain weight. (Hooray!)
